Situated on the ever-expanding western fringe of Auckland’s central suburbs, the largely triangular peninsular of Point Chevalier sits on the southern shore of Waitemata Harbour.
Built on predominantly flat land, Point Chevalier stretches out from its town centre on Great North Road, bordering the State Highway 16 motorway, to the tip of the peninsula in the north. The character-filled suburb of solidly-built homes constructed mainly in the 1940s to 1960s.
With easy access to a number of parks, beaches and leisure amenities, Pt Chev’ as it is affectionately known, is seen as an alternative location for homebuyers looking at more affordable residences compared with the likes of Ponsonby or Grey Lynn.
For its compact size, Pt Chev’ has its fair share of parks and reserves, most notably Coyle Park at the east of the peninsula. Visible from Coyle Park is Meola Reef, an outcrop of black basalt rock which extends north into the harbour. Other parks include Eric Armshaw Reserve, Walter Park, and is a short distance from Western Springs.
Pt Chev’ caters for all levels of schooling with St Francis and Pt Chevalier Schools at the primary level, Pasadena Intermediate and Western Springs College at the secondary level. For tertiary education, Unitec Institute of Technology on Carrington Road offers a comprehensive portfolio of programs extending from certificates and diplomas through to degrees and doctorates.
